My approach to choosing maternity photoshoot outfits is a lot like my approach to food. I love playing with textures and contrasts. Fashion is a form of self-expression, so there’s no one-size-fits-all formula. The best way to find an outfit that sparks joy is to explore different options and see what feels most “you”. Here, I’ll walk you through the choices I made for my outfit changes and the feelings they brought to life.
Matching Set Skirt and Crop Top for Maternity Photoshoot Outfit #1
This outfit immediately felt right because it embodied everything I wanted—youthful, feminine, playful, elegant, graceful, and a little bit sexy. Many maternity shoots lean toward form-fitting, silky dresses for a sensual vibe, which is beautiful. But for this shoot, I wanted something lighthearted and joyful, so a floaty, light-colored two-piece was just perfect.
This particular set from Araminta James is a vision in white linen, with flowy ruffles and a soft ribbon that subtly scream femininity and polish. The side slit added just the right amount of flirtiness, and the structured linen made it easy to play with movement during the shoot. Instead of paying the $300+ retail price, I rented it from FashionPass for $40! If you’re curious to try it out, you can use my code “KHANHMI” to rent six items for just $55—a better deal than their current Black Friday promotion at $59. At the time of the photoshoot, I was 163 lbs, 36 cm fundal height, 5’3, and I ordered a Small for both the top and skirt.
Playing with Texture and Color for Maternity Photoshoot Outfit # 2
Infusing a sense of playfulness throughout our maternity photoshoot was important to me because Mike and I are best friends and it reflects the relationship we have. I chose soft, cozy colors that complement each other to make the shots visually appealing. For added contrast, I’m wearing a combination of flowy linen and a soft, fuzzy sweater, while Mike is also in linen. These textures create subtle layers of visual interest that really draw the eye and bring warmth to the photos. Lastly, I added a subtle, playful touch—a delicate bracelet with pearls and tiny fruit charms. It’s a small detail, but it captures the childlike joy and excitement I’ve been feeling.
His entire outfit is from Everlane. He’s 5’9, 160 lbs. Wears a 30 x 30 in jeans and a Small in their shirts. They run really boxy over there! My fuzzy lavender sweater is a size Small from Anthropologie (you can find my sizing in in the previous section). Both our tops are no longer being sold. But you can check out some similar items here.
Keep it Simple Silly for Maternity Photoshoot Outfit #3
Sometimes “basic” is just a meaner way to say timeless and classic. 🙂 As you’ve probably noticed, the matching denim and neutral colored top is a trendy combo for maternity shoots. My hunch is that people are overstimulated from all the social media content and there’s a desire to return to basics.
I love this light colored cozy combo. My boyfriend maternity jeans are from Hatch in a size 29 and my bralette is from SKIMS in a size L for a 38 band. And as Nov 12, 2024. All these items are still available for purchase. You can also get my jeans on the world’s largest retailer if you prefer: Hatch Maternity Boyfriend Jean.
