Finally, a how to guide for DIY hanging clouds that aren’t LED clouds flush against the ceiling. This is a quick DIY guide on making cheap and reusable clouds that are perfect addition to a birthday party, nursery, or baby shower.
Here are the supplies you’ll need (with links and more details):
- 12 in Skewers
- 8 in Large foam balls
- 2-3 in Small foam balls
- 32 oz Poly-fil – I used less than 12 oz for two large DIY hanging clouds, feel free buy a smaller or larger bag as needed.
- Hot glue gun – I got a wireless one so I could work from any angle I wanted without needing to deal with cord or cord length.
- Mini glue sticks – make sure they’re the right size for your hot glue gun.
- Large Paper clips
- Fishing Wire
- Command ceiling hooks
Here are the steps I used:
- First get 1 large foam ball and secure 1 paper clip to the top of your foam ball. Then unfold the paper clip and hook it firmly into the ball in a triangular shape so that it can bear weight. This is how you’ll hang your DIY cloud later.
- Next, create the basic structure for your hanging DIY cloud. Some examples: 1 large ball with 2 smaller balls skewered to either side, or 1 large ball with 1 smaller ball skewered.
- After you’ve created the rough structure for your DIY cloud, start gluing poly-fil to the balls. Honestly, I wasn’t careful with how much I used and you don’t have to be! I just grabbed large clumps, and glued them to the ball. Asymmetry is your friend! If you think about it, clouds aren’t shaped evenly like circles, they’re usually random shapes. So go wild with your DIY clouds!
- And when you’ve completed your DIY cloud, affix your command strips to the ceiling.
- Next, measure out how long you want your fishing wire to hang from the ceiling, and loop the wire through the paperclip in your DIY cloud.
- Et voila! Finally, it’s time to hang your DIY cloud on the command strip hook.

General advice:
Personally, I think this is the perfect project to do with friends! It’s easy with few instructions. And it’s completely free flow. Doing this myself would take 2 hours. But if you make these DIY hanging clouds with some friends and wine, it might still take 2 hours. 😊 But you’ll have way more fun!
